Theatre, Musicals & Concerts – Views & Reviews

Top Hat – Aldwych Theatre, 12 September 2013

Top Hat - Gavin Lee The most charming show currently on the West End closes on 26 October, so I thought I’d tap along for a second visit to say cheerio.

Alex Gaumond has moved on from the role of Beddini to play Mrs Trunchbull in Matilda, paving the way for his understudy Russell-Leighton Dixon to take on the role full-time. The Italian Singer, one of the multiple roles previously played by Mr Dixon, has been added to expand Martin McCarthy’s role.

Although I was initially disappointed that the female lead was not to be played by Kristen Beth Williams at this performance, her understudy Charlie Bull was filled with talent and grace and a wonderful chemistry with her leading man Gavin Lee.

Top Hat - Lauren Jade - Alan BurkittI would heartily recommend that you catch this show (a more detailed review can be found in my original post) before it closes next month. When closing notices were posted in June there was talk of a UK tour next year, but no further news has been announced since. It’s been a long time since the West End has seen such a polished and charismatic show – even on second viewing I was grinning with contentment throughout.

‘Top Hat’ is playing at the Aldwych Theatre until 26 October. Tickets available via TopHatOnStage.com.
